Are you a gifted wordsmith/researcher who thrives on turning compelling ideas into tangible results? Do you have a knack for connecting organizations with the funding they need to effect real change? If so, Mental Health Association Oklahoma (MHAOK) is looking for you! We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Grant Writer to help us secure the resources we need to continue our critical work supporting individuals at the intersection of mental illness and homelessness.
At MHAOK, our objective is simple (but not at all easy): to improve the lives of individuals affected by mental illness or homelessness through advocacy, direct services and innovative programs. With your help, we can continue making a powerful impact in Oklahoma’s communities—helping individuals connect to the care they need and walking along side those in hopes of crossing the bridge from homelessness to housing.
Why This Job Matters
As a Grant Writer at MHAOK, you’ll play a key role in bringing funding to life-changing programs. Your ability to craft clear, persuasive, and thoughtful proposals will be vital in securing the resources that support individuals on their journeys to recovery and stability. It’s a unique opportunity to combine your writing skills with your passion for mental health advocacy and homelessness solutions.
What You’ll Be Doing
In this role, you’ll have the chance to engage in a variety of tasks, each crucial to driving MHAOK’s mission forward. Here’s what you can expect on a day-to-day basis:
– Research & Identify Funding Opportunities: Dive deep into understanding the philanthropic entities that support mental health, substance use and homelessness causes. Your research skills will be essential in finding funding sources that align with our programs and strategic goals.
– Craft Winning Grant Proposals and Reports: Write clear, accurate and compelling grant proposals that effectively communicate MHAOK’s impact and vision. Whether it’s a program proposal or a progress report, your writing will help funders understand the importance of our work and why they should support us.
– Collaborate Across Teams: You’ll work closely with MHAOK’s program staff, finance team, communications and leadership to ensure our proposals are aligned with funding priorities and convey our strategy and progress with accuracy, as well as satisfy the funders’ grant award requirements. Your ability to bring people together to create a cohesive, powerful narrative will make a real difference.
– Project Management: Oversee the process of planning, developing and submitting grants. Stay organized, track deadlines (hello, Salesforce!) and ensure everything is submitted on time and to the highest standard.
– Budgeting: Work hand-in-hand with the finance team to deliver required budgets that are accurate and comprehensive. The details matter, and your attention to them will help ensure funders see the full scope of what we’re working to accomplish.
What We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate will have a passion for making a difference and a strong background in nonprofit grant writing. Here’s what we’re looking for:
– Experience: You’ll need at least 4 years of experience in grant writing, nonprofit fundraising or a related field. Bonus points if you have a proven track record of securing funding from foundations, corporations and government sources!
– Writing Skills: Exceptional written communication is a must. You’ll need to be able to take complex, important ideas and communicate them clearly and persuasively.
– Research Savvy: You’ll need strong research skills to identify potential funding opportunities that align with MHAOK’s mission and programs, as well as current, relevant data to support your persuasion to the funders.
– Detail-Oriented: This job requires a high degree of organization. You’ll be managing multiple deadlines and ensuring proposals meet all funder requirements—so attention to detail is key.
– Team Player: You’ll be working with a collaborative team, so being able to both work independently and as part of a team is essential.
– Tech-Savvy: Experience with grant management software like Salesforce is a plus! You’ll also be comfortable using funder portals and tracking systems, as well as organizing data to ensure we stay on top of every grant.
